Evening theme: Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd debuted during the flower power year of 1967, and a promising career awaited the playful boys from Cambridge. But the band’s guiding light and songwriter, Syd Barrett, quickly burned out due to drug use and the music industry’s relentless demand for hits. Against all odds, the band survived the loss of both its frontman and driving force.

The following years were filled with experimentation as the group searched for a new musical direction. It wasn’t until 1970, when Pink Floyd moved away from psychedelia and stylistic experiments to write songs about people, emotions, and relationships, that the band – and especially its new captain, Roger Waters – truly found its voice. Lyrics became central, and Waters’ sharp pen turned the band’s releases into concept albums with real depth.

Waters typically wrote in plain language (rock lyrics without metaphors), but the 1977 album Animals stood out with lyrics constructed as a fable about a competitive society. His perspective—combining both nihilism and reconciliation—became a missing link between 60s beat music and the punk of the late 70s.

From the song “If” (Atom Heart Mother, 1970) to “Two Suns in the Sunset” (The Final Cut, 1983), we follow Pink Floyd’s journey through the real world. Thomas performs intimate solo renditions of the songs “If”, “Set the Controls”, “Echoes”, “Free Four”, “Breathe”, “Brain Damage”, “Welcome To The Machine”, “Nobody Home”, and “Two Suns In The Sunset.”
